Attic insulation

devider

Most of the time, the attic is the most efficient place to add insulation. Normally, for attic insulation, a contractor sprays an insulating material between and over the ceiling joists.

The air barrier installed on the ceiling needs to be waterproof to make sure that the heat and moisture of the house don’t get to the attic, where it’s colder, and can’t cause condensation during winter. Look up for air leaks up at the ceilings, the top part of the inside walls and , the passage openings such as ventilation columns.

The adding of insulation must not block the soffits; it might be necessary to put baffles.

Insulating your house

Even if previous generations were accommodated to poorly-insulated houses, most people, today, prefer to live in warm and comfortable houses. Today, a healthy house needs to be airtight, well-insulated and well-ventilated.

Insulating your house is just like choosing the right clothes for the weather. A wool sweater will keep you warm… as long as it’s not raining and wind isn’t blowing too hard ! For those windy and rainy days, we need to cover our woolen cloth with a waterproof nylon jacket so we can stay warm and dry. It’s the same principle for your house! On its exterior envelope, right under the bricks or the siding, we find an air barrier playing the same role as the nylon jacket : preventing the wind from crossing the walls.

Then comes the insulating (your sweater) and the vapour barrier. This last one keeps the moisture out of the structure, where it could cause serious damages.

Insulating your basement from the inside

The walls of your basement are unique : they need to stand in the way of a lot of moisture movements coming from the inside as much as from the outside of your house.

Sprayed polyurethane insulation is stiff and doesn’t rot. It keeps its insulating caracteristics for life. Adherent to its support, it doesn’t get packed up and doesn’t degrade over time, unlike mineral insulating. Sprayed polyurethane allows a perfectly airtight and waterproof insulation, suppressing the thermal bridges by its continuous insulation, which contributes to great energy savings.
